Referrals & Access

Do I need a referral for physical therapy in Connecticut?
Connecticut allows Direct Access. Patients can see a PT for up to 90 days without a physician referral. Insurance requirements vary; call us and we'll verify your coverage before your first visit. Call (860) 489-0867 (Peck Road) or (860) 496-9851 (Alvord Park).
My doctor referred me to physical therapy. How quickly can I get in?
We typically schedule evaluations within a week. Call (860) 489-0867 (Peck Road) or (860) 496-9851 (Alvord Park) to set up your appointment. Most patients are seen faster than they expect.

Insurance

What insurance do you accept at Maletta Pfeiffer Physical Therapy?
We accept most major insurance plans. Call Brittany at (860) 489-0867 (Peck Road) or Lisa at (860) 496-9851 (Alvord Park) to verify your specific plan before your visit.
Does insurance cover all my physical therapy visits?
Most plans cover physical therapy but may require a copay or have a visit limit. We'll help you understand your benefits before treatment starts so there are no surprises.

NeuFIT / NEUBIE

What is NeuFIT / NEUBIE therapy?
NEUBIE is an FDA-cleared electrical stimulation device that works with your nervous system rather than just muscle tissue. It helps patients regain function when standard PT has stalled. We have 8 NEUBIE-certified providers across our two Torrington locations.
Is NeuFIT covered by insurance?
NEUBIE treatment is typically billed as electrical stimulation therapy. Coverage depends on your plan and diagnosis. Call us to discuss your specific situation before your first appointment.
How is NEUBIE different from a TENS unit?
TENS masks pain signals; NEUBIE targets neuromuscular re-education. Think of TENS as turning down the volume on pain and NEUBIE as retraining your nervous system to move correctly. The technology differs at a fundamental level: NEUBIE uses a direct current waveform that drives deeper tissue response.

Vestibular & Concussion

What is vestibular rehabilitation?
Vestibular rehab treats dizziness, vertigo, and balance problems that originate in the inner ear or brain (including BPPV, concussion symptoms, and cervicogenic dizziness). Our Peck Road team includes an AIB-VRC certified provider and a specialist with 16+ years of vestibular experience.

Hand Therapy

What does a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) do differently?
A CHT has passed a board exam specifically in hand and upper extremity rehabilitation, beyond the base PT or OT license. Robert Ross MSPT CHT at our Alvord Park clinic has held this credential since 1994. That makes him one of the longest-tenured CHTs in northwestern Connecticut.

Locations & Logistics

Which Torrington location should I go to?
Both locations offer the full range of physical therapy services. Peck Road (30 Peck Road) is convenient for patients coming from the north or Route 44 corridor. Alvord Park (245 Alvord Park Road) serves patients from the south and Route 8. Hand therapy (CHT) is available at Alvord Park specifically.
Are your Torrington locations taking new patients?
Yes, both locations are accepting new patients. Call (860) 489-0867 for Peck Road or (860) 496-9851 for Alvord Park. Most evaluations are scheduled within the week.
What should I bring to my first physical therapy appointment?
Bring your insurance card, a photo ID, your physician referral (if your plan requires one), a list of current medications, and comfortable clothing you can move in. If you've had recent imaging (X-ray, MRI), bring those reports too.

Have a question we didn't answer?
